California Assembly Bill(AB) 2098 was introduced in February 2022, by California Assemblymember Evan Low, who had previously formed the Vaccine Work Group with six other Democratic lawmakers, with the intent of developing legislation promoting COVID-19 vaccines and \u201cbattling misinformation.\u201d The bill was supported by the American Medical Association, passed the California Assembly in May 2022, and the California Senate in late August 2022, before Gavin Newsom signed it into law.<\/p>\n
AB 2098 bars doctors \u201cfrom providing \u2018treatment or advice\u2019 \u2018to a patient\u2019 \u2018related to COVID-19\u2019 when that treatment or advice includes (1) \u2018false information\u2019 (2) \u2018that is contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus\u2019 (3) \u2018contrary to the standard of care.\u2019 If a doctor goes against this ill-defined \u2018consensus,\u2019 the doctor is guilty of \u2018unprofessional conduct\u2019 and can face disciplinary action.\u201d<\/p>\n
